I couldn’t stand this song when it came out. It was everywhere, it was repetitive, and for some reason, everyone else in the world loved it.
This week CBC Music released a series of videos to YouTube called Songcamp. They gathered some Youtubers and brought them together to create covers of pop music. Since I’m subscribed to Daniel Kim, I saw this video, and I suddenly loved this song:
I just love the mix of their voices combined with the minimalistic accompaniment. That bass line rocks (or rather, it funks, since it’s pretty funky), and the light drumming (pretty sure they used brushes) kept me nodding along with the song the entire time.
I have a particular fascination with Meghan Tonjes’ voice. It’s very airy, a lot like Ellie Goulding’s. Lisa Levie’s voice is also very strong, and I love the way she controls her vibrato. Mix in Daniel Kim’s deep voice to make it sound fuller and the harmonies will make you melt!
I don’t know what it is specifically, but this cover just sounds much more intimate than the original. It feels personal. And I can’t stop listening to it.
Ever like a cover more than the original song? Let me know below!
