The semester is almost done and I’m scraping by to catch up with my reading. The last books on my list are Austen’s Emma and Alfred Jarry’s Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician. The first novel, I know a lot about. The second, not so much.
Or do I?
You can tell from the title alone that Dr. Faustroll sounda a lot like Tristram Shandy. And we all know how that went.
I swear I am reading the same book, just significnantly shorter and translated from French. Crazy syntax and diction, interjections with important documents, a prententious main character…these books could be brothers.
Or maybe Dr. Faustroll is what Tristram Shandy would be if Sterne was high when he was writing. The protagonist here is perpetually 65 years old, and bathes in wallpaper.
I wish I was joking.
*sigh* Here we go again.
