I am a huge Young the Giant fan, so it’s a bit of a surprise that it’s taken me this long to write a post about them. They released a new album a few months ago, which I still have been listening to…literally all the time. The album’s title song is “Mind Over Matter”:
This song is both calming and jarring at the same time. (And it’s currently the ringtone on my phone.)
I was telling myself that I was going to pick a song suited for the events of the past week (i.e. my sister’s high school graduation) but I didn’t want anything too obvious or sappy.
And while “Mind Over Matter” is more of a love song, the chorus matches the feelings of grads all over: “Yes! We’re going to change the world, but if I stumble, help me up.”
And if the world don’t break
I’ll be shakin’ it
‘Cause I’m a young man after all
And when the seasons change
Will you stand by me?
‘Cause I’m a young man built to fall
“Mind Over Matter” is all about the feeling of being able to hold the entire world in your hands, with the fear of failure always in the back of your mind. And think that’s just perfect for the occasion.
